Did you realise that – of all people – Fidel Castro has a blog? That’s right, kids: the 80+ year-old revolutionary leader of Cuba, perpetual thorn in the side of United States, father of really nice (occasionally explosive) cigars and (according to Nicky Wire, as I recall) hung like a horse, has his very own blog. It’s called, “Reflexiones del Comandante en Jefe”, or “Reflections of Comrade Fidel” (I think) and apart from being as low-tech as blogs can get, is available in eight different languages (one of which is English, don’t worry) and is really rather amusing. When the recent G20 summit opened on 2nd April, Castro concluded his blog entry on the subject by saying, “Today it began and concluded as I was writing these lines! Amazing!” The jolly old geezer’s rather impressed by the instantaneousness of the global media these days, bless him. Not that he doesn’t have considered opinions to express, as you’d expect from a world leader, it’s just the whole exercise is made so much more pleasant by being peppered with less restrained comments such as:
“Nobody was surprised that Obama was the star of the London summit. He represents the most powerful and wealthiest country in the world. He is favored by special circumstances. Bush, lying, cynical, war-mongering and nasty, is not there.”
Castro, it would seem, is about as impressed by The Man Who Isn’t George Bush as I am.
Then, on 24th March, at the conclusion of his commentary on a baseball match involving Japan and some other country that isn’t the USA (the details aren’t made clear, which, again, adds to the overall pleasure of reading), Castro remarks, “Everything was said and foretold several days in advance. My friends, the reporters of the Western news agencies will not have any material to highlight, with greater or lesser emphasis, which in their opinion are difficulties connected with socialism.”
Baseball, socialism, and geriatric vitriol. What more could you want from a blog? (Apart from a few widgets in the sidebar, perhaps).
